Common Retinal Diseases

Retinal diseases vary widely - some are common and easily remedied with simple procedures and or treatments. Other retinal diseases are rare and more difficult to diagnose. These usually require more complex treatments.

People with retinal diseases experience a large array of symptoms. These symptoms vary from specks floating in their vision to blurred or lost vision. Many retinal diseases can cause the same symptoms, which can be associated with diabetes, trauma to the eye, or family history. Thorough eye examination, followed by other tests to confirm the diagnosis and or extent of damage are required.

These are the most common Retinal Diseases

  • Age-Related macular degeneration
  • Diabetic retinopathy
  • Epiretinal membrane Also known as macular pucker Macular hole
  • Retinal Detachment

  • Common Vitreous Diseases

The vitreous humor is the clear gel that fills the space between the lens and the retina of the eye. It is often referred to as the vitreous body or simply "the vitreous".The vitreous is the transparent, colourless, gelatinous mass that fills the space between the lens of the eye and the retina lining the back of the eye.

Unlike the fluid in the frontal parts of the eye which is continuously replenished, the gel in the vitreous chamber is stagnant. Therefore, if blood, cells or other byproducts of inflammation get into the vitreous, they will remain there unless removed surgically. If the vitreous pulls away from the retina, it is known as a vitreous detachment. As we age, the vitreous often liquefies and may collapse. This is more likely to occur, and occurs much earlier, in eyes that are nearsighted (myopia). It can also occur after injuries to the eye or inflammation in the eye (uveitis).
